BA.2 subvariant facts

Professor from the Department of Medicine at McGill University, Canada, Dr Donald C Vinh said that WHO noted that the Omicron variant had three main subvariants namely BA.1, BA.2, and BA.3.

Until now, the vast majority of all Omicron cases were BA.1. But in some places, BA.2 appears and spreads faster than BA.1,” said Vinh.

Meanwhile, Dr Amesh A Adalja, a doctor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, suspects that the BA.2 subvariant is more infectious than the previous variant.

However, experts are still investigating how fast the subvariance can spread in the community.

The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is of interest to scientists because of its relatively higher number of mutations, which allows it to evade some of the immune response," said Dr Richard Reithinger, vice president of global health at RTI International.

He added that the level of transmission and pathogenicity or its ability to infect and cause disease was higher than previous variants of the corona virus.

However, the ability of the Omicron variant to cause severe disease is lower.

The question for newly identified variants and subvariants such as Omicron BA.2 is how these three characteristics differ from the original SARS-CoV-2 virus (variant) or the Omicron variant and why," Reithinger said.

The BA.2 subvariant is currently the variant under investigation or variant of interest (VoI) in the UK. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not included it as a variant of concern (VoI)
